Welcome to Bulwark Reformed Church
A confessionally Reformed church in SW Missouri committed to the experiential preaching of the Word of God.
“Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following. For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our guide even unto death.”
- Psalm 48:13-14
Our service times are at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM every Sunday. Visitors are welcome to join us for food and fellowship between the services!
Bulwark in the Scriptures
Our name is inspired by references in God’s Word. The Bible often utilizes the imagery of fortifications, bastions, towers, walls, and other defensive structures to illustrate the refuge that God’s people can find in Him and in His salvation. One such example is Isaiah 26:1, “In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.” His salvation is here represented as a sure defense for His people, and the chapter goes on to speak beautifully of the “everlasting strength” found in Him for those whose trust is placed in Him and whose minds are stayed upon Him. Of course, Psalm 48:13-14 contains a reference to the bulwarks and palaces of the city of Jerusalem, which are seen as symbols of God’s provision and protection of His people, which are to be told to “the generation following”. The Psalm closes with a confession that “this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death”. We are reminded of our dependence upon Him for provision and guidance, and that reconciliation with Him, through His beloved Son, is the only source of refuge and comfort with which to meet death itself. The name Bulwark reflects this refuge that we find in Him, and the trust that we place in His provision. This wonderful passage in Psalm 48 also reminds us of our commitment to instruct our children, “the generation following”, in the Lord’s grace and provision for His people. We sincerely pray that they might learn to know Him and that their trust might be in Him as well.
God-Glorifying
The Church is called by God and exists to be His people. He has laid special claim on His people, the Church of God (1 Cor. 1:2). The Church in turn, exists to serve and glorify Him. Our worship and our actions as a Church, must therefore be structured in such a way as to maintain reverence and devotion to Him.
Christ-Focused
The Church is the Bride and Body of Christ, and He is the Head (Col. 1) and Cornerstone of the Church (Eph. 2:20). It is therefore fitting “that in all things He might have the preeminence”. It is through His perfect work, in His incarnation, earthly ministry, death, resurrection, and continuing intercession that His people have redemption, reconciliation with God, and hope of life eternal.
Spirit-Filled
The work of the Holy Spirit is vital to the Church. It is the work of the Spirit that applies salvation to the hearts of God’s children. We humbly recognize our dependence on the Spirit’s work and presence in our worship, for “he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Gal. 6:8)
Word-Centered
God’s Word is wholly inerrant, divinely inspired, and complete (2 Tim. 3:16, Rev. 22:18-19). The Church is to bring this Word to lost sinners. It is the preaching of the Word which the Lord uses for the salvation of sinners, adding them to the Church (Acts 4:4, Rom. 10:8,13-15). God’s Word is the ultimate standard for life and doctrine, and the Church is called to be faithful to it.
Covenant-Fellowship
God makes covenant with His people, the Church, and demonstrates His covenant faithfulness throughout the Word, in both the Old and New Testaments. That covenant relationship exists today, is still rooted in God’s tender mercy and faithfulness, and the covenant promises are still made to us and to our children (Acts 2:39). Additionally, the Church continues to exist as a covenant community that dwells in fellowship with Christ and with one another (Acts 2:46-47).
Who we are
We are a gathering of families committed to the Reformed Christian Faith, who desire to worship and serve the Lord together. We desire to see His Word preached in truth and faithfulness in this corner of Missouri, to the encouragement of His people and the salvation of lost sinners. We acknowledge our complete and total dependance on Him and desire to walk in the light of His Word, in repentance, faith, and holiness. We welcome any and all visitors to come and worship with us!
